Jim is graduating from high school. He doesn’t really like the idea of going to
university for 4 more years to earn a degree. He knows he will have to do it
one day, but for now, he just wants to earn a little money and take it easy for
a while. Jim’s father is disappointed in Jim’s decision. Jim senses this
disappointment and he tries to find ways to please his father. For instance,
Jim loves working with computers, so he downloads interesting programs for
his father. His father appreciates that, but he can't help wishing that Jim
would just go to university.
One day, Jim overheard his father talking to his colleagues about the
problems they were having with their bookkeepers. They were not trained
accountants and, as a result, they continually made mistakes. He listened
very carefully and began to think about developing a software program to
solve his father’s problems. With this in mind, Jim began developing an
accounting software program to simplify the bookkeeping process for his
father’s company. In fact, he developed such a good software program that
the work that is required by the auditor once a year will be significantly
reduced. That means reduced costs for his father! Jim enjoys this project
immensely – and he can't wait to show his father.
Jim finished the project and now, he can't wait to surprise his father. In the
meantime, his father was wondering what was occupying so much of his
son’s time lately. The big day arrived! Jim explained to his father, and
demonstrated how the program works and how it could solve his father’s
problems. Jim’s father just looked at Jim in quiet disbelief. He had no idea
how talented his son was. Jim felt wonderful! He will never forget the look on
his father’s face that day. It’s something he’ll remember for the rest of his
life. Just as importantly though, through this process, Jim realized how much
he enjoyed this kind of work. Not only did he gain his father’s admiration, but
he also realized that if he enjoyed working on this project so much, he would
probably enjoy studying in this field as well. If he enrolls in university, once
he graduates, he will have the credentials that will provide him with the
opportunity to get paid for doing what he loves doing!
